In Praise of the Palace Diner in Biddeford, Maine
Just got back from a short new years trip to beautiful New England, where the Missus and I were able to enjoy some snowfall along with a number of old favorites -- the killer seafood chowder at the Maine Diner in Wells, unbelievably delicious walnut cream pie at Moody's in Waldoboro, Maine, and a great, fresh, inventive and comforting meal at LA Burdick in Walpole New Hampshire.
Still, the absolute top of the list for us, without any question or hesitation, was the Palace Diner in Biddeford Maine. (18 Franklin St., Biddeford, ME, (207) 283-8462.) In fact, I think this place may just be my current favorite restaurant in the world. The place is Maine's oldest diner, and it consists of ten seats at a counter with no other tables or other seating, in an old Pollard Dining Car. Run by a guy named Kyle, who seems to know most of his customers by name, the place is only open for breakfast, from 6 to 10:30 a.m. The food is extraordinary. I love corned beef hash and order it pretty much anytime it's on the menu, and the Palace has the best I've ever had -- homemade, super flavorful, with just the right amount of spice, potatoes, and perfect crispy exterior. If this place were in Los Angeles where I live, I would eat this hash three times a week (at least I would until my hydraulic system stopped working). Also, wonderful, perfectly cooked eggs, great pancakes and french toast, and their homefries are absolutely superb. And on our last visit, the woman next to us ordered some kind of grilled caramel muffin thingy that looked so damn amazing, I can't stop thinking about it. Huge portions, and, on top of everything else, the prices are frankly shockingly low. I don't think it would be physically possible for two people to consume more than $15 worth of food in one sitting; for the Missus and me, we had breakfast at the Palace twice, and both checks came to about $11.
I'll stop raving now, but, seriously, this place is a gem. If the Palace Diner were in Los Angeles, the dining car would be a fake constructed by some out-of-work set designer, the prices would be literally ten times higher, and there would be a constant line of hipster dufuses waiting to get in. You guys in Maine don't know how good you have it!
