Description
Maison d'Andre Billeaud was built in 1903 by Mr. and Mrs. Andre Billeaud during a time when the small township of Broussard was starting to grow. The Billeaud family owned the Billeaud Sugar Mill in Broussard, which was the largest sugar mill in the western area of Louisiana's vast sugar cane belt. This home was utilized as a bed and breakfast for several years and also a venue for weddings and private parties. Before the present owners, the home was also operated as an art studio and gallery. The home is dripping in character and history. It has 14 foot ceilings on the first floor, large, stately bedrooms, and vast living areas. The antique windows allow the natural light to pour in and fill up the historical spaces. There are two large master suites on the first floor, as well as, a formal living room, formal dining room, a breakfast area, and a huge closed in porch/sun room. The original wood floors are all throughout the downstairs except the breakfast room and kitchen. The gorgeous staircase winds up three stories and gives the foyer a grandiose feeling. The second floor has two more bedrooms. The former "honeymoon suite" was an addition to the house. It features beautiful stained glass windows, a private balcony, and a private entrance from the courtyard. The third floor to the house was, at one time, just rafters. Eventually, they added the second floor stairway and made the attic the third story. These rooms can be used as bedrooms or for storage. There is an authentic slave cabin in the back yard which was moved onto the property from an unknown plantation. The cabin was used to teach art classes and then later, as a guest house for tenants of the bed and breakfast. This home has been vacant for a while and needs to be restored to its past glory. It possesses all of the majesty and history of a beautiful plantation home, right in the middle of Broussard and minutes away from Lafayette. If you want to be a part of local history, this home is for you. Less
