Truth be told while I'm super fond of huge old homes, I'm not crazy about what happens to huge old homes when they are offered at prices with a whole lotta zeros at the end. Many of them, while old lack the personality and history of the homes I love and lust for.
The owners often take a beautiful old dame and update her insides, ruining her charm and character and often destroying her secrets. (hint, if your home is older than 51 years consider something OTHER than recessed lighting)
When I do my hunting I usually skip over the billion dollar babies. Once in a great while I'll make an exception.
This house is one of those exceptions. It's an exception because quite frankly, she's exceptional.
I looked at her, went hunting elsewhere but was brought back to her. Something about her stuck with me and that's how I know when I have a special house. When I go back for a second or third look.
Clearly with a price tag like this one she's going to go to someone with a massive expendable income but I think she needs that...
What do you think?

"Poplar House" is an elegant Federalist style mansion which is sequestered amidst 35 acres in one of the Main Line's most sought-after locations. Impressive stone gateposts mark the entrance to the property, and, from here, the private drive winds through woodlands and park like grounds culminating at the stately residence which commands a scenic panorama of views. Magnificently detailed throughout, the strikingly pisturesque mansion is a residence of great architectural significance. Especially noteworty are the elaborate moldings and imposing columns. Augmenting the estate are a carriage house and an 18th century caretaker's cottage. Evoking the grace and charm of a bygone era, "Poplar House" affords the opportunity to be restored to its original splendor. Truly a residence of distinction.

I'm editing this post which I almost never do but it's been brought to my attention that this house is in danger of being torn down.
Can't tell you how that disgusts me. This home despite it's price tag grabbed my attention and held it. This house stayed with me and I've thought about it more than once after putting this post up.
To tear down such a massive, beautiful old home in the name of progress is a grave mistake.
Imagine if all the old homes were destroyed in this fashion? These homes are links to our communities history.
Please take a second and go to the website designed to raise awareness about this exceptional home and it's history. Then be sure to sign the petition!!

I'm also putting up some photos from the "Save Poplar House" website that are labeled as being from 1902.

Unfortunately local builder and developer Caswell F. Holloway applied to the township on Sept. 28 for a demolition permit.

I worry for people that have no respect for history or historic places.
Poor home. Stuff like this makes me berserk.
Thanks for letting me know!
We have started a campaign to advocate against the demolition of Poplar House. Please take a moment to visit www.poplarhouse.org, and to sign our petition against the demolition of the mansion and the other historic structures on the property.
Headed over there now! Please send me any information you have and I'll be happy to put it up here on my blog!
