Lion Manor?

Oh lordy, lordy, lordy...look what I done found now...
Considering what it could potentially BE this price isn't awful.
I'm sensing a new obsession on the horizon. I'm seeing some serious serious updated interior design, perhaps Bliss Spa in the Spa area, this could make an insane upscale B&B/Resort/Spa/Retreat...Maybe THIS could be my Lion Manor? Time to get the Business Plan out. Poor Mike...

The Manor-The Hildreth Kennedy Bloodgood Estate

This newly restored c. 1906 country estate, privately set and marvelously secluded amid its gently sloping lawns, is a genuine treasure-a stunning piece of Berkshire history which awaits the next generation lucky enough to inherit this masterpiece of the Gilded Age.  Accompanied by 40+ acres of fields, woods and wetlands, with commanding views of the rolling Berkshire Hills, this elegant property offers the pleasures and style of a gentler time, coupled with a superb renovation which welcomes new lives and laughter into this classically elegant home.

Graced with twelve bedrooms, twelve full baths and 3 half baths, and no fewer than ten fireplaces-not to mention the stunning murals, the superb wood and stonework, the sweeping colonnaded porch and the hundreds of windows gazing on to the bucolic landscape beyond-this is a home which leaves one searching for superlatives with which to communicate its grand and unique beauty.

From the Great Hall with its traditional English manor fireplace and painstakingly recreated panels, wainscoting and adjoining Gentleman's library, to the simple warmth of the bright, high-ceilinged Carriage House, this country estate has a place for everyone in your life and for every mood.  Add to that the expansive spa, gymnasium, serene resort-quality hot tub and Moroccan-style salon in the nearby, newer 6,000 sq. ft. building and you have a property like no other, both superbly old-fashioned and yet boasting amenities undreamt of in any other age.

In many ways, the storied history of this turn-of-the-century masterpiece reflects the history of the Berkshires itself over the past 100 years.  Built in 1906-7 by prominent New York banker and sportsman Hildreth Kennedy Bloodgood, the new manor-house was christened Mepal after his prizewinning Hackney show horse, "Star of Mepal," the first of about one hundred of these horses Bloodgood had imported from Oxfordshire, England to the village of New Marlborough, Massachusetts.  With his passion for husbandry, Bloodgood would eventually breed in these fields numerous prize sheep, horses, cattle, and his beloved pedigree cocker spaniels, a practice continued here by his two daughters--Mrs. J. Macy Willets, herself a pioneering breeder and competitive rider, and Mrs. Charles Scribner of the famed New York publishing house.  Over his long life, Hildreth Bloodgood would serve as executive director and judge for countless national horse shows, for the Westminster Kennel Club, and as President, until his death in 1919, of the American Spaniel Club-and for all his many passions and obligations, it was at Mepal Manor where he raised his beloved animals, and to which he always returned.

In 2000, in association with the renowned architect Robert Swain, new owners carefully and exhaustively renovated The Manor for its new life as an intimate and luxurious spa for a clientele who knew and expected the very best.  They transformed The Manor into an eclectic and elegant country home and the classroom/gymnasium into a world-class spa, restoring many of the estate's treasures to their original brilliance while also outfitting the property for the needs and demands of the 21st century.  From the painstakingly researched and recreated period wallpapers, to the superbly modern radiant-heated maple floors of the yoga studio, this was a renovation which ignored no detail and spared no expense in its quest to create for The Manor a new golden age.

The first thing that strikes one on a visit to The Manor is the serene, pastoral beauty of its secluded setting amid the gently rolling hills of New Marlborough.  The panoramic views from the estate encompass forest, meadows, hills, and the mountains beyond; strolling the broad lawns, one meets the stands of birch and maple sheltering the ramble of a year-round stream, which feeds into a sparkling pond; and the 40+ acres of The Manor are themselves bordered by over a hundred acres owned by Gedney Farm, and hundreds more protected and managed by The Trustees of Reservations.

The Manor house itself is modeled on such classic English country seats as those at Hampshire and Cheswick; its characteristic double-towered facade, however, is traditionally Flemish in design and gives the building a welcoming aspect as one approaches the home up the stately drive.  On the main floor, a bright, tiled foyer gives way swiftly to the stately Great Hall, with its native stone fireplace, murals by local artists, and double doors leading onto the wide western porch with its broadly commanding views.  Adjoining, one finds the cozy wood-paneled library perfect for an evening's reading by another fireplace, as well as the octagonal Game Room which occupies the base of The Manor's turreted tower.  The formal dining room, like the rest of this expansive house, is perfect for entertaining on a grand scale or an intimate one; and the twelve bedrooms and twelve full baths and 3 half baths, spread over three floors, ensure that when another spectacular meal is done and the evening draws to a close, friends and family will each find a quiet place ready for them under the bright and starry country night.

The Manor House, now beautifully and thoughtfully reunited with its Edwardian origins, shares this unique estate with the delightful 6,000 square foot spa/yoga studio/meditation center--an innovative and superb transformation of the former gymnasium.  This serene temple to personal well-being has as its focus an indoor/outdoor hot tub which overlooks 240+ acres of the Berkshires most scenic views; simply, this is one spot that has to be seen to be believed.  The spa has numerous private spaces, a workout/yoga studio where streams of bright natural light illuminate its heated maple floors, and two fully equipped locker rooms with steamrooms and showers.  Nearby, the sleek salon and its stylish retro design, complete with its own private entrance and lounge areas, will have you brainstorming up new celebrations with which to entice and delight the important people in your life.
Rounding out the estate is the Carriage House, attached to the main house by a traditional stone archway and itself offering a private office/conference or home entertainment space.  Additionally, set at the edge of the woods is a small Caretaker's House, currently divided into apartment and office spaces.

All of these are serenely set amongst the many long fields, ready for the easy pleasures of summer sports, while the cool, glassy pond welcomes Berkshire wildlife in all seasons.

We are pleased to be able to invite you to pass an hour or two strolling these grounds, sharing in the renewed beauty of a classic Edwardian manor house, in the serenity of the Spa and the stunning, panoramic views; just don't be surprised if you, in turn, begin to walk these halls imagining the many invitations and celebrations yet to come.
