I've mentioned our house in the Berkshires to you all before. We've had it for 36 years now and to us we are as much at home and part of the community there as we are here in the city.
The Berkshires have always been a popular summer destination to folks from NYC but we don't like it much. The folks who go to Great Barrington and Stockbridge are the ones who also get invited to the Hamptons. Moneyed, entitled, and rather obnoxious. (True story to give you an example: Local high end supermarket in Lenox, MA. Long line on a Saturday. Local woman doing her weekly shopping. Irritated NYer behind her asks her "Are you from around here" Woman answered "Yes" The irritated NYer huffed "Well can't you do your shopping during the week? We are only here for the weekend you know")
As a result those of us who know the Berkshires and love the smaller quieter towns try to avoid the places these ninnies go to and that means Great Barrington.
HOWEVER, for this home I'll make a serious exception. This place is fantastic.

Hi, it's funny but I am on the same crusade. I spend alot (too much) time surfing the web trying to figure out an affordable place to live. Right now it stinks living month to month (1/2 money to bills and 1/2 to the mortgage) and constantly being in fear of losing my job at one of the "great" i-banks (read pressure cooker). Interested in moving to Great Barrington (and seriously so) and just found this house (then your blog). I would rent a room, work in the city and wife and child would live in Great Barrington and hopefully child will go to Steiner school -- which is doable since my taxes are ridiculous in Tarrytown. That house is closing on this Wednesday. Realtor said it is actually a modular which is surprising because it looks like an old barn. $380k seems a more than tad high given that it is on a major road where cars drive a little fast and (if that data is correct) it sold for $110k in 2005 (which was cheap). Hudson and Rhinebeck are other ideas (but immediate surrounding towns are redneck and Great Barrington area has more down to earth, less narcissistic types). It is month to month for more than 95% of the US population thanks to our awesome politicians who work for the 1% of the top 1%; the next 20 years stand to be like this and things will get worse. Hence the aim of moving to Great Barrington is to have no mortgage and access to the same things we have here in Tarrytown. Only difference will be that here it is a commuter mentality (where people do NOT socialize) and there it is the self-focused NYC weekenders (but hopefully not bent too much this way). We considered North Carolina but the sprawl is on there and worthy parts are not so cheap.
Great Barrington is a fantastic town and I love walking around there. I'm also a huge fan of Lenox and Northampton for wandering around.
Good luck and please check back in here and update us!
